Recognize Stroke Warning Signs: B.E.F.A.S.T.

When it comes to stroke, every second counts. Knowing the warning signs and acting quickly can save a life.

Use B.E.F.A.S.T. to Spot a Stroke

  • B = Balance: Sudden loss of balance or coordination.
  • E = Eyes: Sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes.
  • F = Face Drooping: One side of the face may droop or feel numb. Ask the person to smile—does their smile look uneven?
  • A = Arm Weakness: One arm may be weak or numb. Ask the person to raise both arms—does one drift downward?
  • S = Speech Difficulty: Speech may be slurred or hard to understand.
  • T = Time to Call 911: Stroke is an emergency. Call 911 immediately. Note the time when symptoms first appear.

Other Stroke Symptoms

Be alert for these sudden symptoms:

  • Numbness or weakness of the face, arm, or leg—especially on one side of the body
  • Confusion, trouble speaking, or difficulty understanding speech
  • Trouble seeing in one or both eyes
  • Trouble walking, dizziness, or loss of balance and coordination
  • Severe headache with no known cause

If you notice any of these warning signs, call 911 right away. Fast action can make all the difference.
