Frequently Asked Questions

When should I go to the ER vs. Urgent Care?

Go to the emergency room for acute, life-threatening conditions like chest pain, signs of a stroke, severe abdominal pain, uncontrolled bleeding, seizures or head injuries—anything that could be considered a “life-and-limb” situation. Choose urgent care for non-life-threatening issues like sprains, sore throat, mild asthma or urinary tract infections. These are conditions that need prompt care but aren’t emergencies.

When should I call 9-1-1 for a medical emergency?

Call 9-1-1 if you experience chest pain, shortness of breath or heart attack symptoms like arm or jaw pain, dizziness or weakness. Seek immediate help for signs of a stroke (slurred speech, sudden numbness, severe headache), loss of consciousness or any life- or limb-threatening injury. When in doubt, get emergency care.

What does it mean to be a Certified Primary Stroke Center?

A Primary Stroke Center is a hospital with advanced certification from The Joint Commission to provide rapid, specialized care for patients experiencing signs of a stroke, such as slurred speech, sudden numbness or severe headache. To achieve this designation, hospitals must follow strict national standards for care established by The Joint Commission, in partnership with the American Stroke Association. TGH Brooksville, TGH Spring Hill and TGH Crystal River are certified as Primary Stroke Centers and Chest Pain Accredited by the ACC. Additionally, TGH Crystal River holds the special designation of being the first Certified Primary Stroke Center in Citrus and Levy Counties.

Is a freestanding ER different from a hospital ER?

Yes. Both provide 24-hour emergency care for serious conditions like chest pain, difficulty breathing or signs of stroke. A freestanding or standalone emergency room, like TGH Citrus Hills Emergency Center in the neighborhood of Citrus Hills, offers the same emergency services, including onsite labs and imaging, but does not have inpatient beds. If you need admission, surgery or specialized care, you’ll be stabilized and transferred to an emergency hospital nearby.

Where should I take my child for an emergency?

If your child is experiencing an emergency, you can go to any of our ER locations near you for pediatric emergency care. All sites are equipped to treat children with urgent conditions like high fever, difficulty breathing or injuries. If more specialized care is needed, our teams have direct access to Muma Children’s Hospital at TGH, providing seamless transfer to advanced pediatric emergency services.

What happens if I need to be admitted to the hospital?

If you need to be admitted, our team will begin immediate emergency stabilization and treatment right away. At our freestanding TGH Citrus Hills Emergency Center, patients requiring hospital care are carefully stabilized and then transferred to a nearby hospital for continued treatment. This ensures a smooth, safe transition without delays in care.

What do I do after an emergency room visit?

After your emergency room visit, follow all discharge instructions carefully, including taking medications, restricting certain activities and making follow-up appointments. Monitor your symptoms and return to the ER if they worsen or new concerns arise. We recommend you schedule follow-up care with your primary care provider or a specialist to support your recovery and provide continuity of care.
